What is wedding videography? Everything you need to know

Wedding videography - bride and groom posing for picture

By now, you’ve probably already heard of a wedding photographer. You know what they do and what their job entails. But a term that is becoming increasingly more popular is “wedding videography” or a “wedding videographer”. But what exactly does a wedding videographer do? Luckily, in this blog, we’ve listed everything you need to know to make the best decision for you and your big day.

What is a wedding videographer?

As I’m sure you’ve guessed, “videography” is the process of making videos or films - in this instance wedding films. Depending on the type of package a videographer offers, they can be with you from the very start of your wedding day - such as your pre-wedding preparations - to the very end (typically leaving after the first dance). From this, they will create a beautifully put-together wedding video for you to watch year after year. This video may be a short-form, highlight film featuring all of your special moments, or a longer-form, documentary-type film that includes full ceremony and speeches. This all depends on the type of wedding videography packages your chosen videographer offers.

During your wedding day

During your wedding day is where the magic really happens - not just for you and your partner, but for your wedding photographer and videographer too. Usually, if your photographer and videographer are separate suppliers, they will still work in very close unity with one another. This ensures you get the best photographs that your wedding video then brings to life showing behind the scenes of these moments.

A videographer usually works alone or with a partner with either a single or multi-camera set-up. They will follow the wedding party throughout the day capturing all the little moments you might not remember, and of course those big pivotal moments too.

After your wedding day

After your wedding day, a videographer becomes a person of many talents. They will begin to work through hundreds of clips, choosing the best ones for your wedding film. After this, they create a plan to piece the clips together to create the best cinematic video of your wedding possible. Here, they can also create short snippets known as sneak peeks that are perfect to share on social media. Typically wedding videographers are their own sound editors and colour correctors and colours graders too. All these steps are what take the most time, and why a wedding film turnaround may be slightly longer than that of your photographer.

Your videographer should work closely with you to decide on what style of film you want and the colouring you prefer for your clips.

Why choose wedding videography?

Without a doubt your wedding day will be one of the most memorable moments of your life, so why not memorialise that through the use of film? Whatever type of wedding film you choose, whether it be a cinematic highlight, or a chronological documentary-type video of the day, just like your wedding photographs, you’ll be able to view your wedding film by sitting back, relaxing, and watching your big day on screen time and time again.

A wedding film can capture more moments than your wedding photography can. Tiny instances such as guests mingling and having a laugh, to the groom looking excitedly nervous waiting at the altar, these parts will be brought to life through film and you’ll be able to watch the bits of your wedding you didn’t know about (or forgot if you have quite a lot to drink!).

How S2 Pictures can help

Here at S2 Pictures, we are a video production service that uses our skills to capture beautiful and magical wedding films. Through the use of meticulous cinematic videography, we create a “behind the scenes” style of wedding film. If you hardly notice we are there, we've done our job right!

We come as a pair and use a camera each. This allows us to capture the intricate little details that the use of one camera might miss. We then compile this into a cinematic highlight video of your big day. With our style being candid and “behind the scenes” you’ll feel more relaxed, enabling us to capture real and non-staged moments that look beautiful and timeless.

We will work closely with you to discover the style of wedding video you like. This can be anything from the video edit, to the type of music you prefer for the film. If you’re not a fan of slow-motion clips, not a problem! If you love a particular colour grade, fantastic! Whatever you want in your wedding film, we will aspire to meet your requirements.

With our two specially selected packages, starting from 8 minutes in length, you can choose the one that’s right for you, and add on any extras you may like, such as the full speeches being recorded. If you think we may be the wedding videographers of your dreams, please contact us and we will happily talk you through our process so you can make the right decision for your big day. Your wedding is your story, and that’s exactly what we aim to capture.
